About Christian Dior

Christian Dior founded his eponymous fashion house in 1946, in Paris, however The House of Dior recognizes 1947 as its opening year. Dior debuted his 1st collection in the grim post-war period in Europe. While he did receive criticism for this collection, the lavish designs helped restore Paris’ image as a fashion capital. In 1948 Dior launched his luxury prêt-a-porter line, as well as his first perfume, Miss Dior. Following this, in 1949 Dior introduced luxury accessories, putting his name on an international stand. Several notable personalities have held the position of artistic director at Christian Dior. The designer himself handpicked Yves Saint Laurent as the first and only ever head assistant for the label. Soon after the death of Christian Dior, in 1957, YSL had been appointed with the position until 1960. From late 1960 Marc Bohan became artistic director. In 1970, Bohan launched the first Christian Dior Homme collection. In 1989 Gianfranco Ferre, became the first non-Frenchman to have held the position. John Galliano brought in a sense of rebellion to the runway, when he succeeded Ferre in 1997. As of 2012, Belgian designer, Raf Simons has been stylistic director.
