About Burberry

Burberry is a British luxury fashion house founded in 1856, by Thomas Burberry. By 1880 Burberry has introduced the unpopular, hardwearing, water-resistant, yet breathable fabric, gabardine, to his male coat design. These were especially popular in 1914 amongst the English military during WW1, as they were well suited for the weather conditions. In the same year Thomas Burberry created one of his most iconic items, the Trench coat, which continues or be one of the best selling pieces of the brand even today.

The distinctive Burberry tartan print is one of the most recognizable, and copied prints worldwide. Initially the caramel, red, white and black check print was used solely as the lining in clothes, however with Rose Marie Bravo entering the company the print was adapted towards several other Burberry Accessories. In 2001 Christopher Bailey joined Burberry as Creative Director, and has maintained the position till date.

In the 90s the brand faced one of its biggest issues with the Chinese Imitation market. Between 2001-2005 matters worsened as a group of the youth, know as ‘Chavs’ started using the brands items, or imitations, as a form of representation.

Clothing: With the growing issues of chav culture and imitation, creative director Christopher Bailey decided to reduce the use of the check print. He focused on the younger generation and worked with the Burberry Prorsum and Accessorize. The print however still appears on the lining as it represents the tradition of the brand. Burberry is focused an ageless, traditional and legendary creations, as opposed to flashy ones, perfectly representing the ultimate lady and gentleman.

Handbags: Burberry handbags come in several shapes and sizes. The collection features totes, clutches, bowling bags, office bags, briefcases, wallets, cross bodies, and several more. They all come with seasonal updates in various colors, and a range of materials from a variety of leathers, suede, shearling and canvas. Clean lines and deep shades are aspects of each design.

Accessories: Rose Marie Bravo and Christopher Bailey, both paid special attention the Burberry’s Accessories collection ranging from eyewear, fine jewellery, smaller accessories, umbrellas, and much more. They used their accessories line to target a younger audience, however still ensured each items maintains the roots and culture of the Burberry brand.
