The reference that housed the world's thinnest automatic movement at its 1960 launch, wound by a solid gold micro-rotor. Sixty years on, Quill & Pad still ranked it among the ten thinnest mechanical watches; this example is in white gold.

Why we love it
In 1960 Piaget unveiled the calibre 12P, at 2.3 mm the world's slimmest automatic movement, and the Piaget Automatic ref. 12103 is the original reference built around it. Alain Delon wore his own 12103 to the 1966 premiere of Is Paris Burning?, and A Collected Man identifies its design language as the basis for today's Altiplano.
That slimness rests on Valentin Piaget's micro-rotor patent: a compact, deliberately heavy gold rotor set off-centre, with every case recessed to clear it. For the owner, that means a watch that winds itself from the wrist yet slips beneath a shirt cuff. Here the idea is dressed in white gold, its champagne dial bearing only the words Piaget Automatic.
In 2020, sixty years on, Quill & Pad still ranked the historical 12103 among the ten thinnest mechanical wristwatches. At Artcurial in Monte-Carlo, a yellow gold 12103 with calibre 12P sold for €1,820 in July 2017. Piaget marked the movement's 50th anniversary in 2010 with the 1200P, and credits 12P as the inspiration for its later ultra-thin automatics.
