Vacheron marked its 1955 bicentenary with calibre 1003, the thinnest hand-wound movement in the world when it was unveiled, and the Vacheron Constantin Disco Volante ref. 6395 belongs to that story. Documented examples of the reference are fitted with calibre 1003, the movement the house rebuilt in 2010 for its Historiques Ultra-fine 1955.
Work on the calibre began in 1952, and that pursuit of thinness shaped the reference: Antiquorum catalogued one 6395 as extra-flat. Here a broad gold hobnail bezel, cut into tiny clous de Paris pyramids, catches the light around a dial signed Vacheron & Constantin. As InsideHook notes, Disco Volante was never an official name; collectors gave it to wide-bezelled cases like this.
Christie's catalogued a 1959 ref. 6395 whose calibre 1003 was stamped with the Geneva seal, on a Vacheron hobnail gold bracelet. Antiquorum sold a pink gold example in Hong Kong in April 2019 for HKD 25,000, and the reference is recorded in yellow, white and pink gold.
