Vacheron Constantin drew the Patrimony from its slender 1950s dress watches, above all the ref. 6179 of 1957, and the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony ref. 81180/000R-9159 distils that idea: hours and minutes, wound by hand, in 18k pink gold. It is the original 40 mm generation of the hand-wound, time-only Patrimony, which was reworked at 39 mm in 2024.
Its in-house movement packs 98 parts so tightly that the case rises just 6.79 mm, slimmer than the 7.7 mm watch that followed. It comes from the house that made the world's thinnest movement in 1955, and it carries the Hallmark of Geneva, the city's mark of origin and fine craftsmanship. With its silver-toned opaline dial and pearl minute track, it slips easily beneath a shirt cuff.
The saleroom concurs. At Phillips Hong Kong in March 2024, an example of the identical reference realised HK$76,200, at the upper end of its estimate, with the specialists hailing a time-only classic above passing trends. The Rake, reviewing twenty years of the Patrimony, found in it the marks of an enduringly classic collection.
